Ethiopian Airlines set to resume Boeing 737-MAX operations after fatal crash in 2019 #Baaghi

Feb 1, 2022: According to a an AFP report, Ethiopian Airlines is set to operate the Boeing 737 MAX on Tuesday for the first time since the fatal crash nearly three years ago that killed all 157 people on board and triggered the global grounding of the aircraft.

The ill fated flight 302 from Addis Ababa to Nairobi crashed six minutes after takeoff in a field southeast of the Ethiopian capital on March 29, 2019, killing 189 people five months after a similar crash in Indonesia.

The twin disasters and subsequent scrutiny of the 737 MAX’s faulty flight handling system known as the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) amounted to the worst crisis in Boeing’s history.

The Airline has long said it would be the last carrier to use the single-aisle jets again and resumed operations of the 737 Max jet after “intense recertification” by regulators in the United States, the European Union, China and Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Airlines also provided a list of 35 other carriers that are already flying the 737 max after its recertification.

The decision to wait until the 737 MAX was flown again was “really commendable,” said Yeshiwas Fentahun, who was president of the Ethiopian Independent Pilots Association in 2019 but is no longer with the company.

It is to be noted that the victims of the Flight 302 crash, the worst in Ethiopia’s history, came from more than 30 countries. According to legal documents filed in Chicago in November, Boeing has entered into an agreement with the victims’ families and claimed responsibility for the crash.

Specific sums are not mentioned in the proposed agreement, as the jurors will be responsible for determining the sums.
