Sixteen teams, including defending champions Portugal, former champions France, Germany and Spain, have made the event even more thrilling by making it to the second round of Euro 2020.

In the first round of Euro 2020, 24 teams from mainland Europe participated, out of which 16 best teams have made it to the pre-quarter final stage. Now the event is about to enter the second phase in which all the teams will come with more preparations.

The second round of Euro 2020 will start on Saturday with a total of eight matches to be played. In these eight matches, four teams will win and qualify for the quarter-finals, while the losing teams will be given a return ticket.

The first match of the pre-quarter finals will be between the teams of Wales and Denmark in Amsterdam, while the second match will be between the teams of former champions Italy and Austria in London.

On Sunday, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic will face each other in Budapest, while defending champions Portugal and Belgium will face each other in Sevilla. Former champions Spain and Croatia will face Copenhagen in the two pre-quarterfinals on Monday, while France and Switzerland will face Bucharest.

The last two matches of the Round of 16 will be played on June 29, with England and Germany in action in London and Sweden and Ukraine in action in Glasgow.

If successful, the first quarter-final will be played on July 2 in St. Petersburg and the second in Munich. After the matches in Baku and Rome on July 3, the winning team will advance to the semi-finals.

Typically, a 32-team tournament consists of eight groups of four teams, with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the quarterfinals.

But when Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) increased the number of teams from 16 to 24 to make football more popular in Europe, they had a problem with how the 16 teams would be decided in the pre-quarter finals.

That is why the format of the Euro Championship was changed in 2012 and not only two groups were added but also a knockout stage was extended.

It was decided to send the top two teams from each group as well as the top four teams in the third round to the second round.

This format was previously tested in the 1986, 1990 and 1994 FIFA World Cups. At that time, the third and fourth ranked teams were playing in the playoffs for the third position, but in Euro 2020, the decision was made keeping in view the points table.
