“Lightweight engineering is the future of sustainable innovation, where we strive to maximize performance while minimising environmental impact.”

A transformative event unfolded at the prestigious University of Birmingham, Dubai. A seminar was conducted on the topic of lightweight engineering for sustainable innovation, with a collaboration between Dassault Systèmes, LaunchTech, and the University of Birmingham, Dubai.

The event kicked off with an introduction by the Master of Ceremony, Maryam Naqi followed by the  representative of Dassault Systèmes, Hadrien Lacoste-Lagrange. He and his partner Dominic, then discussed Reverse engineering and design optimisation in 3D, while talking about CATIA, a globally renowned software for engineering and design, which stands at the forefront in 3D CAD product design. This tool enables professionals to seamlessly create, simulate, analyse, and manufacture innovative products. Three main approaches were discussed. Direct, automatic, and curve approach used in CATIA for reverse engineering.

Dassault Systèmes, and LaunchTech focus on 5 main areas. Molecular modelling, Computer-aided design (CAD), Computer-aided Engineering (CAE), Computer-aided Manufacturing (CAM), and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM).  With their expertise, they talked about a future where designers could bridge the gap between creativity and feasibility, bringing their concepts to life while prioritising sustainability.

Strata Manufacturing was up next. Mariam and Aysha Al Ameri talked about the use of CATIA in the Aviation and Aerospace Component Manufacturing, as well as the design philosophy.

This was followed by a short presentation by Dr. Farrukh Hafeez , who is an Associate Professor as well as the Programme Director, Mechanical Engineering, at the University of Birmingham, Dubai. He talked about the thermal aspects in Machining of CFRP Single Point Incremental Forming.

The University of Birmingham, Dubai, played an instrumental role, by showing their commitment to academic excellence. Drawing upon their wealth of knowledge, their esteemed faculty brought forth a diverse range of perspectives, enriching the event with an understanding of the engineering industry. As the event came to its end, nurturing sustainable innovation in UAE was summed up, while igniting a spark of innovation, hoping it will brighten the path towards a more sustainable tomorrow.
