Fire rips through 20-storey residential tower block in Milan
Aug.30, 2021: A fire broke out in a 20-storey residential building in Milan, prompting rescue workers to flee to make sure no one was caught in the flames and thick smoke.
On Sunday, a fire broke out on the upper floors of the tower on the southern outskirts of the region of Lombardy’s capital. “The flames then spread to the lower levels,” the fire service said on a Twitter account.
There are about 70 families in the building, who were being contacted to make sure no one was missing. “Firemen are moving from apartment to apartment, knocking on doors to make sure no one is inside,” Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala told the Courier della Sierra newspaper. “But we are optimistic because people had time to get out,” he added.
The newspaper reported that about 20 residents suffered from shortness of breath due to the smoke. Dozens of ambulances and fire engines were at the scene.
