South Africa: For many decades, the fossil of a small child has been hidden in the darkness of South Africa’s Rising Star cave.

The historic skull discovered at the Rising Star cave appears to be of a young child aged about 4 to 6 years and the child appears to be the only surviving remains of the historic human ancestors called the Homo Naledi. The child is thought to have been alive about 236000 and 335000 years ago as is evident from other specimen acquired at the cave.

According to Juliet Brophy who is the lead author in this investigation stated that this fossil is the most important artifact discovered yet that gives proof of our lineage and relation with the homo naledi species.
It is still to be determined whether the child’s gender is male or if it is female but for now researchers have named the child “leti” which is short for”letimela” which stands for ” the lost one” in the local language. This language is one of South Africa’s 11 official languages.
