Former President Muhammad Rafiq Tarar passes away

Mar 7, 2022: PML-N leader Attaullah Tarar has confirmed the death of the former president in his tweet and said that his grandfather Muhammad Rafiq Tarar has passed away.

Born on November 2, 1929, Muhammad Rafiq Tarar breathed his last today at the age of 92. He served the country as the head of state from January 1998 to June 2001.

Earlier, he served as a judge at the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Rafiq Tarar had been ill for a long time. He had a heart attack this morning after which he was taken to the hospital but he could not recover and he passed away. The former president was 92 years old. Rafiq Tarar was from Pakistan from 1998 to 2001. Rafiq Tarar has been the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court from 1989 to 1991. Muhammad Rafiq Tarar was elected as a member of the Senate on a PML-N ticket after retiring as a judge of the Supreme Court in 1997 and in 1998 became president of the country.

Under Rafiq Tarar, the powers of the President were gradually reduced and finally the powers of the President were completely reduced in accordance with the spirit of the Constitution through the Thirteenth Amendment. 

Expressing grief at the death of Tarrar, PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif has said that the former President, a kind elder and a shrewd jurist has passed away.
