France: Daily case tally of Covid19 surpasses 100,000 for first time

Dec 26, 2021: Health officials in France recorded  104,611 cases in the last 24 hours, the highest ever for the third day in a row.

The latest figures from France’s public health agency come ahead of a video conference meeting on Monday in which President Emmanuel Macron and key members of his government will discuss security measures against Covid19. Authorities are concerned about the effects of the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

Earlier Friday, the Health Authority recommended an adult booster job three months after the initial vaccination.

Now the government is moving to extend the health pass issued to vaccinators only if people accept the booster jab. The pass is essential for access to cafes, restaurants and public places, as well as for international travel. Some areas have already implemented their security measures.

Late last month, for example, authorities in Savoie reintroduced the wearing of masks, not only in public places, but also outside – a move that has just been adopted in neighboring Italy.

The latest figures indicate a dramatic increase since the beginning of the month: on December 4, the number broke 50,000 for the first time before steadily rising.

To date, 122,546 deaths from the corona virus have been recorded in France. So far, 76.5% of the population has been fully vaccinated.
