The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is gearing up to host an unprecedented global event, COP28 (Conference of Parties), dedicated to tackling the urgent challenges of climate change. Recognising the pivotal role of education and collaboration, Universities Climate Network has fostered a strong partnership with COP28.

Punjab, Sindh announce 4-day Eid ul Azha holidays

UAEU (United Arab Emirates University) presented a roadmap towards COP28 and beyond, on the 23rd of June, at Fairmont Hotel, Abu Dhabi. The program began at 11 am, starting off with the national anthem. HE Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, the cultural advisor to the President of the UAE, and the chancellor of UAEU, delivered the opening speech.

HE Zaki Nusseibeh addressed the pressing issue of climate change, emphasising that the UAE is at the heart of this global challenge. He highlighted the UAE’s position as one of the second largest greenhouse gas emission hubs and the significant threats it faces, including deforestation, rising sea levels, droughts, floods, hurricanes, and sandstorms. Nusseibeh expressed the importance of COP28 in unleashing transformative action to combat climate change, and he proudly stated that UAEU is a stakeholder in this crucial event.

SABS University Jamshoro Organizes Design Exhibition

The guest of honour, HE Mariam Almheiri, the cabinet member and minister of climate change and environment, also delivered a keynote speech. Maryam Almheiri focused on the imperative to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to 20-30%, by 2030. She stressed the need for world leaders, NGOs, youth activists, and all stakeholders to come together to tackle this issue, as well as highlighted the Year of Sustainability as a pivotal period to find solutions for climate change. The significance of research and development (R&D), youth engagement, and collaboration are prime factors in driving meaningful change. Maryam Almheiri further emphasised the importance of research and innovations at UAEU, particularly in areas such as sustainable transportation and reevaluating our consumption patterns in terms of what we eat and wear.

Lastly, there was a presentation given by Prof. Ahmed Murad about UAEU’s roadmap to COP28 and beyond. He showed us the initiatives that will be taken by UAEU before, during, and after COP28.

This event emphasised the active involvement of universities and their networks, fostering the engagement of students and academic institutions in raising awareness about the perils of climate change. By imparting knowledge and empowering the younger generation, the UAE and COP28 are collectively striving to inspire future leaders to address this global challenge head-on and prioritise a sustainable and resilient future for all.
