Google issues upgrade warning to users after hacker attack
Sept 16, 2021: The most widely used web browser, Google Chrome, is once again at the mercy of hackers and has warned its users to make an upgrade to avoid a security breach.
In a fresh blog post, Google has alerted its users to the presence of two new ‘Zero Day’ threats for Linux, Mac OS and Windows (CVE-2021-30632 and CVE-2021-30633), both of which like the last two attacks, came from an anonymous tip office. Their zero-day rating means that hackers have been able to exploit them even before Google released the fixes, making them significantly more threatening than most security vulnerabilities. Writing on its blog, Google confirmed that they are “aware that the exploits of CVE-2021-30632 and CVE-2021-30633 are existing in the wild.”
As is standard practice, Google is gicing away very little about to these zero-day errors. This is to limit their spread and to give consumers time to protect themselves.
Based on the dates marking the two threats, it is safe to assume that the source of the two zero day errors is the same. It is believed that the attack makes the main JavaScript weak if the program does not clear the signal after freeing it from memory, hackers can use this error to take advantage of the program.
According to advice by Google, to deal with these new threats, all Chrome users should go to Settings> Help> About Google Chrome. If your browser version on Linux, Mac OS or Windows is listed as 93.0.4577.82 or above, you are safe. Google says this new, secure version of Chrome will “launch in the coming days / weeks” so users can’t become safe immediately. But as soon as you can upgrade, you should do so then restart your browser immediately.
Google is constantly fixing Chrome’s flaws, but it’s only effective when billions of its users are contributing to make it safer. Attacks on Chrome are on the rise as it becomes more dominant in the market than ever before, making it important to keep your browser up to date at all times. Go check it out now.
