Hamas releases 2 American hostages for humanitarian reasons
Hamas releases 2 American hostages for humanitarian reasons meanwhile Red Cross says it has two American hostages released by Hamas.
U.S. President Joe Biden said he expects the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt to open for humanitarian aid within 24-to-48 hours.
The highway had to be repaved, and it was in very bad shape,” he said.
Responding to Hamas’s claim it had released two US captives for humanitarian reasons, Al Jazeera senior political analyst Marwan Bishara said the move shows diplomacy could still play a role in defusing the war.
“I’m not exactly optimistic, but I am hopeful that yes, diplomacy does have a role,” he said. “Hamas needs to, must, release all of the civilian captives. There’s no justification for holding them.
“But clearly, Hamas might have a different calculus, and now, I’m analysing that it feels as the pressure builds up, Hamas could start releasing all that pressure by releasing some of the captives in a piecemeal way, meaning not releasing them all at once, but taking its time in order to defuse the situation and allow more diplomacy to play its role in the region,” Bishara said.
“This could open the way for some reinforcement of the idea that diplomacy today is badly needed.”
