India faced Rs 240 million loss after firing of BrahMos missile to Pakistan

Narendra Modi-led Indian government has admitted that the firing of a BrahMos missile into Pakistan’s territory, last year, affected the relationship with the neighbouring country along with a loss of Rs 240 million to the state exchequer.

This was stated by the Indian government spokesperson in the Delhi High Court during the hearing of the missile launch into Pakistan case. He justified the termination of three officers who were held responsible for the mishap and informed the court that the incident cost India Rs 240 million loss.

A nuclear-capable cruise missile jointly developed by Russia and India, the BrahMos, which was fired on March 9, had brought embarrassment to India. Pakistan had sought answers from New Delhi on the safety mechanisms in place to prevent accidental launches of Indian missiles.

After the incident, Indian Air Force had sacked three officers following a months-long investigation. A statement by the IAF said that a probe into the incident had found three of its officers guilty of violating standard operating procedures that led to the mishap and their services were terminated by the Indian government.

It is to mention here that Pakistan had said that a “supersonic flying object” cruising at 40,000 feet from India had violated its airspace and hit an uninhabited civilian area on March 9, 2022 and endangered civil airplanes. Islamabad had also lodged a diplomatic protest. New Delhi had immediately acknowledged the mistake.
