NEW DELHI: The Indian Defense Ministry has decided to convert the experimental scheme for recruiting experimental women fighter pilots in the Indian Air Force into a permanent one. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh informed the media on Tuesday that the decision to induct women as fighter pilots reflects the commitment of Prime Minister Modi towards women empowerment.

“The MoD has decided to convert the Experimental Scheme for induction of women fighter pilots into the Indian Air Force into a permanent permit,” stated the Indian Government on their official Twitter account.

The Defense Minister further said that it is the testimony to the capability of India’s “Nari Shakti” (women empowerment) and that the PM (Prime Minister) fully supports the execution of this decision.

Earlier, the Supreme Court of India also paved the path for the entry of women into the National Defense Academy (NDA).  In 2018, Avani Chatuverdi of the Indian Air Force was recognized as the first Indian woman to fly a fighter aircraft solo. Chatuverdi flew a MiG-21 Bison in her first flight.

Before the government decided to open the fighter streams for women on an experimental basis, Chatuverdi was also a part of the three-member team commissioned as flying officers in mid July 2016.

The first batch of women pilots was deployed in 2020 on the Dornier Maritime Aircraft. It has been reported that 28 women officers were deployed onboard around 15 frontline warships with aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya and the number of appointments is expected to increase.

In relation to this, the Indian Military marked a significant move in their history by beginning the process of inducing women into the military police back in 2019.

Earlier, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Defense, Shri Pad Naik, said that there were 6807 women in the Indian Army. The government is planning effective strategies to represent a considerable ratio of women in the Indian Military.
