17th February 2021: The Indian government has refused to open the Attari border for Sikhs coming to Pakistan to perform religious rites and has barred them from visiting Pakistan at the last minute.

A group of 600 Sikhs from different cities of India were coming to Pakistan today via Wagah to attend the 100th anniversary of Saka Nankana Sahib. A letter full of contradictory claims written by the Home Ministry in New Delhi on the evening of February 17 to the President of the Amritsar Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Bibi Jagir Kaur Bhigowal, claims that the lives of Indian nationals going to Pakistan are in danger and the Indian government has credible information about this, in view of which the government cannot risk the lives of 600 Indian citizens. The letter further said that the Pak-India border is closed due to Corona and it is not appropriate to open it at this time so the Indian government cannot allow a group of Sikhs to go to Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee and Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee Amritsar have protested against the Indian government’s move. Bibi Jagir Korka, president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, says her own government has betrayed the Sikhs. In a statement, he said that this move by the central government of India has broken the hearts of Sikhs.

Another tactic of government discrimination against Sikhs has come to light. He said that it was very unfortunate to stop the group from coming to Pakistan. Pilgrims from different states have reached Shri Darbar Sahib Amritsar and today they had to cross the border but on Wednesday evening a message came from the Indian Home Ministry that the pilgrims could not go to Pakistan.

He said that when the pilgrims went to Pakistan in November, there was no security problem at that time. It is not appropriate to stop the issuance of visas. According to Bibi Jagirkor, the pilgrims going to Pakistan had made full preparations but now their own government has betrayed them.

On the other hand, the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee had booked 20 buses at a cost of Rs 27 lacs. Sardar Amir Singh, secretary of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, condemned India’s move, saying the Indian government is openly hostile to Muslims as well as Sikhs. Shri Akal Takht Sahib should take notice of this. Saka Nankana Sahib is very important for Sikhs all over the world.
