Indian Kanjarbhat Tradition: A bride has to pass a virginity test
24th August: India’s Kanjarbhat’s tradition involves a shocking tradition where the brides have to pass a ‘virginity test’ in front of the whole community.
According to reports, the virginity test for brides, that is still in practice in India’s Kanjarbhat community is a violation of an individual’s bodily integrity as well as disrespect to this sacred relationship.
A member of the community says:

The awful tradition caught the world’s attention after a video went viral on social media. The video was shot by an art student, Siddhanth, and includes the live footage of the test being performed.
In the video, an elderly man of the community can be seen announcing‘’ Maal Khara hai’’ which means that the woman is good and pure.

On the other hand, if blood stains are not found on the sheets, the man will shout ‘’Maal khota hai’’, declaring that the bride didn’t pass the virginity test.
This announcement follows annulment of marriage, ostracization from the community, and in most cases, paying a heavy fine to Panchayat, physical abuse, and beating as well.

Anyone who tries to take a stance against it is subjected to a social boycott by the community.
Once a woman refused to accept the decision of the panchayat that declared her characterless on her wedding night. After many hearings, they couldn’t reach a logical conclusion. After this they asked the woman to hold a burning metal ball in her hands, saying that if she’s pure, she won’t burn herself. The woman was pronounced guilty as obviously her hands got burnt.
Many people in India are raising their voices against this tradition, as thousands of women have already fallen prey to this shameful practice.
Such an outdated and orthodox tradition is a pure violation of a woman’s body!
