Indonesia: 13 killed and dozens injured in tour bus crash

Feb 7, 2022: According to a report by AFP, 13 people were killed and dozens more injured after a tour bus carrying factory workers to a beach holiday crashed on Indonesia’s Java island, according to police.
According to Bantul district police chief Ihsan, “Witnesses we questioned said they saw the driver panicking as he tried to manage the gear stick, so there’s an indication the brake was not functioning or faulty,” he said while addressing a media briefing.
“Thirteen people died. Some died on the scene and others died while being treated in the hospital, while 34 others were injured,” adding that the injured were taken to nearby hospitals.
Late Sunday, officials said the bus and its 47 passengers were heading from Sukoharjo, in central Java, to a family gathering in neighboring Yogyakarta province when the driver lost control as he headed downhill.
The driver was among those killed when the bus collided and collided on the side of the road, destroying the front of the vehicle and severely damaging its right side. According to the police chief, several passengers suffered head injuries and three young children were also injured. Ehsan said that shortly before the accident, passengers were told to get off temporarily, as the bus was having difficulty going uphill.
Fatal traffic accidents are common in the 270 million island nation, where vehicles are often outdated and poorly maintained and road rules are routinely ignored.
Last year in March, a bus carrying dozens of pilgrims plunged into a ravine in the town of Samidang in West Java province, killing 29 people. At the end of 2019, at least 35 people were killed when a bus plunged into a ravine on the island of Sumatra.
