Iran closes western border crossing amid Iraq’s unrest
TEHRAN, Nov 29 (XINHUA/APP):Iran closed a western border crossing with Iraq amid the recent unrest in the Arab country, Tasnim news agency reported Friday.
The closure of the Mehran border crossing took effect on Thursday night, Mohammad Nozari, deputy governor of Iran’s western province of Ilam, was quoted as saying by Tasnim.
The measure is aimed to protect the lives of pilgrims in the wake of recent violent protests and unrest in Iraq, he added.
On Wednesday, a group of the Iraqi anti-government protesters attacked the Iranian consulate in Najaf, some 160 km south of the capital Baghdad, and set fire in it. Both Iran and Iraq have condemned the attack.
