Kashmiri leaders meet Narendra Modi in New Delhi

The Indian government had invited 14 pro-India Kashmiri leaders to attend the talks and more than a dozen Kashmiri leaders are in Delhi to attend the meeting, which will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to observers, while Kashmiri leaders are compelled to negotiate with Delhi for political survival, the Indian government is also in dire need of pro-India leaders on the Kashmir issue.

As per details, talks began in the afternoon local time and are expected to continue for several hours. Leaders of several political parties, including four former chief ministers, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti and Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, are taking part.

Attending the meeting are all the pro-Hindu leaders of Kashmir who were imprisoned before the repeal of Article 370 and then released several months later. A large number of them are still imprisoned.

On this occasion, various quarters are questioning what was the emergency that the Kashmiri leaders who were imprisoned by the government ran to Delhi with one voice. Noor Ahmad Baba, a political commentator and former president of the Department of Politics at the University of Kashmir, says both have compulsions, which is why the meeting has been arranged.

“This is a question of political survival of the leaders of Kashmir. If they do not talk to Delhi, what will happen to their politics in Kashmir. They have to keep in touch and that’s why they are doing all this. Now they will be able to resume the old series of talks which they have not been able to do for two or three years. They want to prove that they are in their position. Are standing and struggling,” he said.

According to Noor Ahmad Baba, the manner in which the Modi government has invited him for talks also makes it clear that the Indian government is also in dire need of such pro-India leaders in Kashmir.

He said that during the last two years, the Modi government has made every effort and tried to discredit him by putting him in jail, “defamed him, stopped him from speaking, disrespected him and then if he is also summoned to Delhi for talks, it becomes clear that the Indian government also needs him. They have come to know that without them, things will not be possible in Kashmir. So they both have their own strengths and weaknesses. ”

Replying to a question, Noor Ahmed said that however, the Kashmiri people were not satisfied with it. “The people of Kashmir are skeptical of the political strategy of these pro-India leaders. Especially since the repeal of Article 370, the uneasiness among them has increased tremendously. So there are a lot of concerns at the public level. ”

However, Noor Baba welcomed the talks and said that there was a way out of the crisis, so there was nothing wrong with looking at the move in a positive light.

On August 5, 2019, Modi’s government repealed Article 370, which gave special powers to Kashmir, and divided the state into two centrally administered territories. Since then, there has been a lack of trust between Kashmiri leaders and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

However, according to reports, Modi wants to start the political process so that the way can be paved for the Assembly elections going forward.

According to Indian media reports, Modi’s government has recently contacted the Election Commission of Kashmir and sought its opinion on what could be done and when the elections could be held in the state. These reports are already in the headlines. There is talk of re-establishing Kashmir as a state and these leaders have been invited for talks on this.

However, intellectuals in Kashmir say that all these efforts of the Indian government will not have any significant impact on the people and will not change the situation on the ground. According to him, all this is being done by India to give the impression to the world that the democratic process is being restored in Kashmir.
