Lahore High Court rejects PEMRA notice

Justice Sajid Mehmood Sethi, restored the license of 24 News at the request of City News Network. The court rejected PEMRA’s plea not to issue a restraining order.
It should be noted that PEMRA had suspended the license of Channel 24 on which opposition parties were also protesting. Journalists had also protested in Islamabad yesterday.

PML-N leader Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan took part in a protest outside the Lahore Press Club by employees of 24 news channels in which he said that by suspending the license of 24 News channel, Imran Khan’s government was violating freedom of the press. He had added that, this move by PEMRA reflects the fascism of this government.
The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has suspended Channel 24 news and current affairs broadcasts for violating licenses and rules.
A statement issued by PEMRA said that under the license issued by Central Media Network, it was allowed to run entertainment related content on Value TV channel while the company was illegally violating all PEMRA rules. It was broadcasting news and current affairs content by name.
Despite repeated prohibitions by PEMRA and the issuance of several notices, the Central Media Network continued to broadcast news and current affairs programs on the channel.
In this regard, the authority had issued a show cause notice on May 7, 2020, under which the company was ordered to immediately close the news and current affairs content and broadcast the approved entertainment content.
According to sources, despite providing several opportunities, the channel management failed to implement the orders of PEMRA.
