Libya's Prime Minister narrowly escapes assassination attempt #Baaghi

TRIPOLI: Libyan Prime Minister, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh’s car was fired upon, however, he has survived while the assailants have managed to escape from the scene.

According to reports of British news agency Reuters, early on Thursday morning, the attackers shot at the car of Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, but he managed to escape unharmed. According to sources, the assassination attempt was made when the Prime Minister was on his way home.

Libya’s opposition has called for a vote against PM Dbeibeh in parliament, declaring the government incompetent. However, PM Dbeibeh says that he does accept the notion of voting for an alternate Prime Minister. It is pertinent to note that the armed forces have mobilized more fighters and equipment in the capital in recent weeks, leading to fears that a political crisis may result in further conflict.

Libya has had little peace or stability since the NATO-backed uprising against Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, following which it was divided in 2014 between warring factions in the East and West. Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh was appointed head of the UN-backed Government of National Unity (GNU) in March. The aim was to unite the country’s divided institutions and oversee the holding of elections in December as part of the peace process.

Meanwhile, rival factions are reportedly vying for the presidency after a split in the election process amid controversy over rules, including the legality of Dbeibeh’s own candidacy for the presidency after he vowed not to run in the election. According to reports, the Libyan parliament which has largely supported the Eastern forces during the civil war has declared that the GNU is wrong and will vote on Thursday in order to name a new PM to form another government.

Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh in a speech said that this week he would hand over power only after the election, meanwhile, UN advisers to Libya and Western nations have said that they will continue to recognize the GNU.

According to reports, the parliament said that there would be no elections following which another political body amended the country’s provisional constitution. much to the dismay of the Libyan public who had registered to vote.

It is pertinent to note that the move by parliament to elect a new prime minister could lead to a return to the status quo of Dbeibeh’s unity government, in which the parallel administration is trying to rule Libya from different cities. However, analysts say that could not immediately lead to a return to civil war.
