Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan, an ally of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has reportedly announced to go to court against the Sindh government’s Local Government Amendment Bill.
MQM Deputy Convener Wasim Akhtar said that the Water Board, KDA, should be with the municipality but the amendment in the Local Government Bill violated the Constitution. He announced to go to court against the Local Government Amendment Bill and protested. Also decided.
It may be recalled that the Sindh Local Government Amendment Bill 2021 was recently passed in the Sindh Assembly by a majority vote.
Under the new Sindh government system, the Sindh government will take over the management of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Sobhraj Hospital, Leprosy Center and Sarfraz Rafiqi Hospital, including the Medical and Dental College managed by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, while the education and health departments were withdrawn from the local bodies.

There will be a system of corporations and towns in major cities of Sindh including Karachi, while vice chairmen of union committees will be members of town municipal council and mayor and deputy mayor will be elected from among the members of town municipal council.
The Department of Births, Deaths and Infectious Diseases has been withdrawn from the local bodies. With a population of at least 5 million, there will be a metropolitan corporation and the term of local body representatives will be four years.
On the other hand, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders have categorically rejected this view of the MQM and said that they will not come under any pressure and will contest the elections vigorously.
