New Zealand under tough lockdown after suspected case of Delta variant

New Zealand had remained largely free of the virus for months except for a few number of cases in February, until an outbreak of Delta variant imported from Australia prompted Ardern to impose a nationwide lockdown on August 17.

According to reports, the number of positive cases in NZ has reached 562, however, on Monday, the number of daily cases dropped to 53, which is the lowest over the past five days.

Ardern addressed a press conference today and said, “I know we all feel encouraged that our number is lower than what we’ve seen in the last few days and I know we’re all willing for that trend to remain. The job is not yet done and we do need to keep going.”

NZ PM has ordered that the Aucklanders, which are around 1.7 million in number, will remain under strict level 4 lockdown for another two weeks, while restrictions for the rest of the country will ease to a level 3.

On the other hand, the health ministry reported on Monday that a woman has died due to myocarditis, which is a rare side effect of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle that can limit the organ’s ability to pump blood and can cause changes in heartbeat rhythms.
According to reports from Reuters, the health ministry did not provide much information about the woman’s age, nor did the Pfizer company immediately reply to an email request for comment.

As per reports, New Zealand has provisionally approved use of the Pfizer-BioNTech, Janssen and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines, but only the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has been approved for rollout to the public.

Jacinda Ardern said the country has 840,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine remaining and it continues to receive 350,000 doses each week.

However, around 21% of the population of 5.1 million people have been fully vaccinated which is the slowest pace among the wealthy nations.
