Lahore, 17th August: A nationwide lockdown has been imposed in New Zealand after the reports of a single suspected case of the Delta variant of coronavirus.

According to details, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern imposed a strict lockdown on Tuesday after the country reported its first coronavirus case in six months from the largest city of Auckland.

According to reports from Reuters, the whole of New Zealand will be under tough, level-four lockdown for at least three days starting from Wednesday. A coastal town, Auckland and Coromandel where the infected person had spent time, will be in lockdown for seven days.

NZ PM Jacinda Ardern to tie the knot soon

PM Jacinda Ardern held a press conference and said, “The best thing we can do to get out of this as quickly as we can is to go hard. We have made the decision on the basis that it is better to start high and go down levels rather than to go low, not contain the virus and see it move quickly.”

According to the instructions issued by the premier, schools, offices and businesses will close and only essential services will remain open. Soon after the orders, people crowded the supermarkets to stock up.

Ardern revealed that authorities were assuming that the patient, who is a 58-year-old male from Auckland, had contracted the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19, although genome sequencing is yet to be completed.

She said that there may also be other cases. Meanwhile, the Auckland Regional Public Health unit is inquiring from the patient for contact-tracing purposes. Hence, coronavirus vaccinations have been suspended for at least 48 hours.

It may be noted that the case of COVID-19 in New Zealand was reported last in February, and since then its citizens have been living without restrictions. However, the international borders have largely remained closed.

Previously, Ardern’s ‘go hard, go early’ strategy has helped curb the pandemic successfully in the country.
