Dec 16, 2021: Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, 96, has been admitted to hospital and will undergo a full medical examination, the hospital said on Thursday.
The National Heart Institute said in a statement that “a full medical examination and further observation will be performed.” It was not immediately clear why Mahathir was admitted. His spokesman declined to comment further. The hospital said the former prime minister was expected to remain in hospital for the next few days.
Mahathir, Malaysia’s longest-serving prime minister, has a history of heart problems. He has had a heart attack and has had bypass surgery.
He is the country’s longest serving Premier and served as prime minister for 22 years until 2003. He returned as prime minister at the age of 92 after leading an opposition coalition in 2018, defeating the party he had once led.
His government fell in less than two years due to infighting. He has been an influential figure in Malaysian politics.
