Many killed and others missing after a ferry capsized in Bangladesh

Lahore, 5th April: A ferry in Bangladesh carrying around 50 passengers sank in the Shitalakhsyaa River south of its capital Dhaka.

According to reports, the ferry collided with a cargo vessel in the river after which it sank leaving at least 26 people dead and others missing on Sunday.

A police official informed that the ferry departed from Narayanganj district about 20 km (12 miles) from Dhaka and was travelling to Munshiganj when the incident happened.

He added that the rescue operation to find the missing persons is still going on, however, some of the passengers managed to swim ashore.

According to the latest reports from the rescue teams, when the ferry was dragged to the shore, most of the bodies were found inside it.

Rescuers and divers from the fire brigade searched for the bodies on Monday as the rescue operation got delayed by a storm last night.

It is reported that the ferry was full of passengers going to their hometown after the Bangladeshi government announced a nationwide lockdown for a week starting from today.

According to the latest data collected from Bangladesh, 7,087 cases of coronavirus were reported on Sunday, bringing its total tally to 637,364 with 9,266 deaths.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office has expressed heartfelt condolence over the loss of precious lives in the tragic incident. It said on its official Twitter account:

A spokesperson from Pakistan’s Foreign Office tweeted, “Deeply saddened by the loss of precious lives in a launch capsize in #Shitalakkhya River, Bangladesh. Heartfelt condolences to the govt. and brotherly people of Bangladesh and the bereaved families.”
