Mars rover suffers from ‘selfie fever’ just like humans

The automatic vehicle ‘Perseverance’, which landed on the surface of Mars in February this year, has also contracted ‘selfie fever’ like humans, according to reports.

NASA reports confirmed that NASA’s observatory Mars Rover took a selfie with an Angelite helicopter on April 6, 2021, the 46th day of the mission to Mars.

The images were obtained using a Watson (Wide Angle Topographic Sensor for Operations and Engineering), located at the end of the rotor’s robotic arm, which scans the living environment with Raman (Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals).

While the rover was looking at the helicopter, 62 individual selfies were taken with Perseverance, while Watson was in front of the camera. Through these ‘Mars selfies’, scientists on Earth monitor the general performance or malfunction of this rover.

According to reports, the Mars Rover is equipped with various cameras and observation devices. One of which is named ‘Watson’ which is mounted on the end of the robotic arm of the Perseverance. According to the report, Watson is itself part of a system called “Sherlock” (SHERLOC), which is installed on the perimeter, and which aims to find and identify molecules belonging to life in the Martian atmosphere.

“Sherlock” analyzes Martian dust, rocks and rocks with its laser spectroscope. To make this work even better and more efficient, it uses two special cameras.

When NASA shared Perseverance’s selfie on its Twitter account on April 7 this month, social media users commented that they found similarities between the faces of Perseverance and the science fiction film Robot called Johnny Five. The robot was also the protagonist of the 1986 film Short Circuit.
