Feb 13, 2022: In Khanewal district of Punjab, an angry mob tortured and killed a man accused of burning pages of Holy Quran.
According to details, the local police allegedly allowed the accused to leave the Mian Channu police station where a mob was present.
The victim was dragged to a nearby place and tortured to death, while police allegedly acted as a silent spectator.
IG Punjab Rao Sardar Ali Khan took notice of the incident and sought a report from Additional IG South Punjab. He also directed RPO Multan to conduct a thorough inquiry in this regard and directed DPO Khanewal to reach the affected area as soon as possible. The IG Punjab said that those responsible for this tragic incident would be brought to justice.
Saturday’s incident took place in Jangal Dera village where hundreds of locals gathered after Maghrib prayers and announced that a man had torn some pages of the Holy Quran and later set them on fire. Because no one was willing to listen to the alleged suspect, the villagers first hung him from a tree and then hit him with bricks, until he died.
The killing follows a similar incident in Sialkot, where a Sri Lankan factory manager was killed by factory workers on December 3 last year for blasphemy.
In November last year, a mob had vandalised a police station in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Charsadda district and set it on fire after authorities refused to hand over a man arrested earlier for allegedly desecrating the Holy Quran.
A mob arrived at the police station and demanded that the authorities hand over the alleged blasphemer. When the police refused to comply with their demands, more people joined the mob, which provoked outrage and, as a result, the police station was attacked.
The assailants also vandalized vehicles parked at the police station, KP Minister Fazal Shakoor said.
Sources familiar with the matter said that the accused of blasphemy has been shifted to a safe place. Shakoor said that action would be taken against the accused as per law.
