Lahore, 10th August: In a shocking revelation, the government has disclosed that 29 major cities of Pakistan have toxic water available for their citizens.

According to details, the government on Monday disclosed in the National Assembly that a large number of cities in the country do not have safe drinking water for their citizens.

Minister for Science and Technology Senator Shibli Faraz revealed this information in a writer reply submitted to the National Assembly on Monday. The reply was actually in response to a question asked by PPP’s Mussarat Rafiq Mahesar.

The documents revealed that the water is contaminated with arsenic, iron, fluoride and bacteria, which is causing skin damage and can lead to serious diseases including cancer.

According to reports from Geo News, the National Assembly was informed that after the samples were taken from underground by the Pakistan Council of Research of Water Resou­rces (PSCRWR), an institution of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the water of 29 cities has been found polluted and harmful for health.

The document stated that the water of Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpurkhas and Gilgit-Baltistan is 100% unsafe and toxic.

According to the PSCRWR, the contamination found in water in Multan was 94%, Karachi 93%, Badin 92%, Bahawalpur 76%, Sargodha 83%, Hyderabad 80%, Muzaffarabad 70%, and Sukkur was 67%.

Furthermore, the House was informed that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab have strived a lot of work on the issue of drinking water. Hence, all provinces should pass laws on the issue of drinking water beyond politics.

According to a report by Dawn News, when Minister Shibli Faraz was questioned on what steps the government has taken to provide safe drinking water to its citizens, he replied that water became a provincial matter after the 18th Amendment was passed in the Constitution.

PCRWR declares five brands of bottled water unsafe to drink

Shibli Faraz added that the job of his ministry was only to carry out tests of water through the PCRWR, the reports of which are further shared with the provincial and local governments to make improvements at their end.
