Lahore: Punjab government rejected the application of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for extension in bail, who is currently in London for medical treatment.

A meeting of the Punjab Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Usman Buzdar was held in which Nawaz Sharif’s request for extension of bail was considered. During the meeting, special committee of the Punjab cabinet submitted proposals on Nawaz Sharif’s health report which the cabinet reviewed.

The decision was announced by Provincial Minister of Punjab for Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Provincial Minister of Punjab for Bait ul Maal and Social Welfare, Muhammad Basharat Raja during a press conference along with Punjab Information Minister Fayyaz ul Hassan Chohan and Provincial health minister Yasmeen Rashid.

According to Basharat, the former prime minister has been given 16 weeks to seek treatment in London, yet he was never admitted in a hospital.

He said that there was no news from London till now that Nawaz Sharif would be operated, he had not been admitted to any hospital after 16 weeks, therefore, Nawaz Sharif’s bail was extended on legal, moral and medical grounds. Maybe, it has been decided that he will write to the federal government that the Punjab government will not extend Nawaz Sharif’s bail.

The cabinet members said that no concrete report has been submitted by Nawaz Sharif to prove that the ground on which Nawaz Sharif was sent abroad needs further expansion.

Nawaz, who is serving seven-year jail term, was diagnosed with an immune system disorder – acute immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) – in October 2019.

He remained hospitalised in Pakistan for weeks and said to be in a very critical condition. The PML-N supremo was granted eight-week bail on medical grounds by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on October 27.
