According to the New York Times, 36,880 new cases of coronavirus have been reported in the country on Wednesday alone after several US states took steps to ease the lockdown and open up the economy.

This is the highest number of infections in a single day since the outbreak began, before the record was set in April. Similar figures have been published by The Code Tracking Project, which is 38,672. Wednesday’s figures have not yet been released by Johns Hopkins University, which has its own infection monitoring team.

At the beginning of the pandemic in the United States, the main centers were New York and New Jersey. But recent increases have affected southern and western states such as Florida, California, Texas and Oklahoma.

More testing is being blamed for the increase, although states such as Florida have also seen an increase in hospital admissions, meaning the pandemic is spreading rapidly in many parts of the country.

According to Johns Hopkins University, there are currently 38 lac confirmed cases in the United States, and 122,000 have died from infections.
