The deceased include four women and one man, all aged 50 to 70 years. The police investigating the crime scene are yet to disclose the charges filed on his case.

Hans Sverre Sjøvold, Chief of Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) informed the reporters on Thursday that the attack “appears as if it may be an act of terrorism” however, the case needs further investigation so as “to clarify what the motives of the accused are.”

Police officers had been in contact with Brathen along with “a result of previous concerns related to radicalization”, as reported by police chief Ole Bredrup Sæverud. They also revealed that the man had converted to Islam prior to the act.
