LAHORE: The Olive plantation in Nowshera is set to produce approximately 112,000 liters of oil per year, worth billions in Pakistan Rupees, according to reports.

Following the success of the Ten Billion Tree Tsunami under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan, the plantation project in Nowshera is set to produce up to 112,000 liters of edible oil per year. According to the Sub Divisional Forest Officer at KP Forest Department, Tariq Khadim, the Peshawar Forest Division has planted Olive trees and other native species on an approximate area of 2,000 hectares [roughly 40,000 kanals] as part of the Billion Tree Tsunami project.

According to Khadim, although the topography was more favorable for farming Olives, a lack of average rainfall and water availability proved a serious deficit. He added that along with Olive trees, the plantation consists of Keekar, Phulai, and other native species of trees at an approximate 8,000 trees per 27-hectare division.

In addition to this, Khadim claimed that the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) government has constructed 10 tubewells to assure ample water supply for the tree saplings using the method of drip irrigation. According to Netafim, drip irrigation is the most efficient method of delivering nutrients to growing crops, “It delivers water and nutrients directly to the plant’s root zone, in the right amounts, at the right time, so each plant gets exactly what it needs, when it needs it, to grow optimally.”

According to Tariq Khadim, one Olive tree can bear approximately 80 to 120 kilograms of fruit worth almost 8 to 14 liters of edible Olive oil.

It is pertinent to note that the Ten Billion Tree Tsunami was initiated by PM Khan in March of last year, with the intent to serve as a model to promote Olive agriculture in Pakistan. According to Khadim, the purpose of the ‘multipurpose’ plantation is to “yield profitable economic returns”.
