ISLAMABAD: The National Security Committee (NSC) under the chairmanship of Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has approved Pakistan’s first-ever National Security Policy (NSP) 2022-2026.

According to the details, a meeting of the NSC was chaired by PM Imran Khan where National Security Advisor Dr Moeed Yousuf gave a briefing on the outline of the policy. Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry said in a statement on the social networking site Twitter that “the meeting of the National Security Council today approved the country’s first national security policy.”

“This policy will be presented at tomorrow’s cabinet meeting,” he said.

A statement issued after the NSC meeting said that the meeting approved the country’s first National Security Policy 2022-2026.

The premier terming it a “historic moment” for the country said said that the security of the country was linked to the protection of its citizens and Pakistan was fully capable of dealing with any internal or external threats.

Furthermore, he said that the formulation and approval of the country’s first NSP was a historic step and the efforts of the National Security Division and all concerned agencies were commendable. He said that all the institutions should adopt integrated strategy for effective implementation of the policy.

The Prime Minister directed the National Security Adviser to submit a monthly report on the implementation of the policy.

During the meeting, National Security Adviser Moeed Yousuf briefed on the features of the policy and said that the national security policy would ensure protection, security and dignity of the weaker sections of the country under a comprehensive national security framework.

He said that economic security would be the focus of the policy for the protection of the citizens and economic security would be the guarantor of the security of the citizens. During the policy making, detailed consultations were held with all federal agencies, provincial governments, experts and private sector and a framework has been prepared to ensure implementation of the policy, he added.

The policy will now be presented to the federal cabinet after approval by the National Security Committee, the statement said.

The meeting was attended by Federal Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Defense Minister Pervez Khattak, Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and Chiefs of the three Armed Forces, National Security Advisor, and senior civil and military officials.

Earlier this month, Moeed Yousuf told a parliamentary committee that the national security policy was designed for the well-being and safety of the people, taking into account the relationship between human, economic and defense security.  He said economic security was a key component of the policy, which aims to provide more resources and expand investment in human and defense security.
