Pak-Russian Diplomacy in the current scenario

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is seen as a geopolitical contest between Russia, America vis a vis NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). And out of nowhere, the visit of Imran Khan to Russia is being viewed as untimely, and an unwise move as regards our frosty relations with America. Our financial position is not very impressive we all know. Are we self-reliant economically or have we endeared ourselves to greater economies like America or for that matter, the IMF which may or may not come to our rescue?

It is imprudent, perhaps it is sending a message to the outside world that we stand with Russia at this critical juncture, supporting Putin against America and the rest of the European Union. The excitement of Imran Khan is unambiguously deceptive causing harm to Pakistan. I am not a purveyor of gloom but how much can we expect of Russia in terms of any tangible help which may come to aid Pakistan at any given time in the unforeseeable future. In the event of war, hard sanctions are being slapped on Russia not only by America but from the European Union who categorically says that Putin is trying to redraw the map of Europe. Biden says he is trying to test the resolve of other countries. Russia might find itself in the oddest crunch. The opposing forces are all fired up to seize the assets and freeze the money of the oligarchs, who Putin finds his refuge in. A few million dollars in aid would be nothing more than a drop in the ocean. The Pakistan army avoided sending its representative who may have been a part and parcel of Imran Khan’s entourage otherwise. It’s rather interesting to see how things shape up by and by more interesting still would be to see how Imran Khan slithers out of such a confounding rigmarole. A confusing yet undiplomatic and unsavory diplomatic awkwardage.

The relationship of Russia with India is far stronger as opposed to Pakistan. We can’t possibly be asking Russians for a massive build-up of arms along our borders against India. A minuscule aid of one or two fighter jets is nothing compared to what it intends to deliver in aid to India.

The stance of Imran Khan that Putin is against Islamaphobia is just hollow rhetoric. Well, if Russia was truly against Islamaphobia they would not have gone against Muslims of Chechnya or the Muslims of Syria.

Since 1946, Europe was divided into Eastern Europe and Central Europe. There was this phrase used as a metaphor by Churchill that the borders of Eastern Europe came to be known as an iron curtain. The borders were believed to be impenetrable. For far too long Eastern Europe was commonly known as the Soviet bloc, making it difficult for the residents and their families across the dividing borders to meet or intermix. But after 43 years of posturing between the Americans and the Russians, the iron curtain fell in 1989. The Berlin Wall was dismantled, now Europe was becoming one. It was in response to that international agreement signed in 1979 between Gorbachev and Reagan of America, the very treaty which saw denuclearization of nuclear missiles and equipment in each country. So Ukraine as part of Russia was one place where they had this nuclear arsenal eventually they had to dump and give away whatever they had.

Status of martyrdom was only bestowed upon lucky persons: CCPO

There are protests across the globe. All insist that this invasion and the spate of bombing and barrage of indiscriminate killings must stop. Pakistan for one must develop a good relationship with Russia and China. Timing in politics is of the essence. Any wrong step could push us further into an abysmally dark tunnel without an opening.

We still have to see the deal clinched by our dear prime minister, to counterbalance our region with substantially more potent missile power than those S-400 now installed in India which are the high light Russian missile power.
