Pakistan and Afghanistan to establish high-level committee to handle border concerns #Baaghi

Jan 31, 2022: Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to set up a high-level committee to address border concerns following the end of a two-day visit to Kabul by Pakistan’s National Security Adviser Moeed Yousaf, who also heads the Afghanistan Inter-Ministerial Liaison Cell (AICC).

A press release issued by the Press Information Department. According to the press release, the purpose of the visit was to discuss with the Afghan leadership the humanitarian situation of the country as well as Pakistan’s recommendations for enhancing economic partnership to help Afghanistan overcome the current challenges. The delegation included Special Envoy to Afghanistan Muhammad Sadiq and senior officials of key ministries.

During the two-day visit, the NSA met with Afghanistan’s Acting Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Salam Hanafi and Acting Foreign Minister Mullah Amir Khan Mottaqi to discuss the current situation in Afghanistan and strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Dr. Moeed Yousuf also met with other relevant Afghan ministers and senior officials to discuss human and economic issues at the delegation level. The visit resulted in significant progress in economic cooperation and support for the social sector, the statement said.

The two sides agreed to set up a national level coordination mechanism to strengthen facilitation at border crossing points. They also agreed to start barter trade, details will be worked out immediately, read the press release.

During the visit, Pakistan offered capacity building and training assistance to Afghanistan in various fields including health, education, banking, customs, railways and aviation. The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to complete three major connectivity projects, CASA-1000, TAPI, and the Trans-Afghan Rail project as soon as possible.

Afghanistan and Pakistan reaffirmed their commitment to peace and stability in their respective countries. The statement said that Dr. Yusuf thanked the interim Afghan government for the warm welcome.
