Dec 11, 2021: A Foreign Office spokesman has said that Pakistan does not want to be involved in block politics based on principles.
After Pakistan’s refusal to attend the Democracy Conference convened at the invitation of US President Joe Biden, the Foreign Office in a statement on Friday highlighted the importance of good relations with the United States.
The Foreign Office spokesman said that Pakistan does not want to be involved in block politics in principle. In this regard, the statement of the Prime Minister is enough to reflect Pakistan’s long term policy of inclination towards China, but a Foreign Office spokesman has denied the allegations.
The spokesman said: “We are in touch with the United States on a number of issues. We value our partnership with the United States and look forward to enhancing our bilateral relations at the regional and international levels.” He said that the Foreign Ministry has already clarified in this regard.
According to a report by the private news agency Express, the Foreign Office spokesman’s cautious statement and explanation suggests that the decision was not an easy one for Pakistan if official sources were to be believed. The conference was convened to advance American geostrategic interests rather than democracy.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman’s statement in which he described Pakistan as the real Iron Brother and also shared the statement of Pakistan’s Foreign Office in this regard, suggests that before making a final decision on Pakistan’s participation in the conference, China was consulted.
According to the report, China’s non-participation in the conference was driven not only by a factor of China but also by the fact that only the elected leaders had to join the US President in the conference. The other were simply allowed to send their pre-recorded statements. No discussions or issues were allowed to be discussed in this conference. Therefore, Pakistan decided not to participate in this conference as it was considered as an opportunity for vested interests.
Amongst more than 100 invitees to the conference, China and Russia were not invited. China has reacted strongly to the invitation of Taiwan, which China considers its part. It has been accused of creating division in the world, but official sources in Pakistan say it should not be viewed from the perspective of bilateral exchanges. Bilateral relations between Pakistan and the United States continue as usual.
A delegation from the US Congressional Foreign Affairs Committee led by Gregory W. Max recently visited Pakistan and a delegation from the Senate Armed Services Committee led by St. King is arriving in Pakistan today.
