Karachi: Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) has released quarterly report on bottled water samples after testing almost 180 brands of bottled water all across the country.
According to the PCRWR report, out of 180 brands of bottled water procured from across Pakistan between April and June 2021, 22 brands were found to be unsafe for human health. Furthermore, the report said that out of these 22 companies, samples of 16 brands were found to be chemically unsafe while 6 were found to be microbiologically unsafe.
According to the report, half of the brands found unsafe are being sold in Karachi. Excessive levels of total dissolved solids (TDS), arsenic and excessive levels of potassium, besides the germs of infectious diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis and typhoid were found in these unsafe water brands.

Excessive levels of arsenic in unsafe samples can lead to bladder disease, liver cancer and skin diseases. Brands considered unsafe include Pure, Blue Plus, Sunlay, Aqua King, Spring Fresh Life, UF Pure Edge, Douro, Dropice, Puricana Mineral, Drops, Best Natural, Al Barkah Water and Koyo.
All these brands were found to be unsafe due to the presence of higher levels of sodium ranging from 60-165 mg/L than Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) bottled water quality standard for Sodium, which was 50 mg/L.

Consumers, however, say that despite double-checking the quality of bottled water, the sale of unhealthy and unsafe water is a question mark over the performance of PSQCA and provincial food authorities.

In addition, most of the counterfeit and unregistered water brands in Karachi are sold in stores located near major government hospitals, which are also used by patients undergoing treatment in hospitals.
The sale of unhealthy water around hospitals is a nightmare for patients. Not only that, most of the fake and unregistered water brands are being sold in parks and recreational areas posing a threat to citizens, especially children.
