In a post on Twitter, Malhi wrote, “The land of Thar is rich in black gold (coal). But the people of Thar are committing mass suicides due to hunger, thirst and poverty.”

He added that the multiple government departments and even non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have allegedly spent billions of rupees in the name of poverty alleviation projects, in the region yet, the lives of the people of Thar have not been affected till date.
