Lahore, 10th May: Pakistan has restricted the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine for people under the age of 40.

Under the government’s new guidelines, people below the age of 40 years can not use the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

The restriction applies to all people under 40 irrespective of their gender.

According to the latest guidelines issued by the government, the interval between two doses of AstraZeneca has been increased to 12 weeks (3 months) instead of 8 to 12 weeks, which was mentioned earlier.

Health Director-General Dr. Rana Muhammad Safdar confirmed the latest updates to the local news agency The News. He also told that the recommendations have been made by an expert committee.

Dr. Safdar also informed that the guidelines on the use of the COVID vaccine around the world keep on changing. Hence, if required, the latest changes for the AstraZeneca vaccine will be reviewed again.

Dr. Safdar added that the decisions are based on evidence to make sure the vaccine’s efficacy and safety for its use in Pakistan.

The doctor also ensured that an efficient system is operational to keep a check in case of any adverse effects.

He reported that so far all incidents reported are of small nature and have been fully recovered.

It is to be noted that currently people aged 40 and above are getting the coronavirus jab across the country.
