Washington, March 29 2021: Dr Anthony Fauci says states lifting and easing restrictions, coupled with the emergence of new mutant variants may mean a surge is imminent, quickly following on the heels of the current plateau.
He expressed these views on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” When case numbers begin to plateau, he said, “you’re really in danger of a surge coming up.” He quoted the example of some European countries who experienced the same.
President Joe Biden said, “Based on what I’m hearing that apparently people are letting their guard down, but I’m having a meeting with the team tomorrow and I’ll get a better sense,” he said.
Infections have currently leveled at 50,000 cases daily, while the aggressively concerted and coordinated vaccination efforts have resulted in a ray of hope, a far cry from the despair ruling as a result of the highest global death toll of 549,000 since the pandemic started.
In Europe meanwhile, France, Belgium and Poland are tightening restrictions ahead of Easter as coronavirus cases surged in Europe, with France calling the situation there “critical.” A peak is the least desirable outcome at this critical stage in the vaccination process according to Fauci.
Texas, Maryland, Connecticut and Mississippi have eased restrictions, lifting mask mandates or allowing restaurants, retailers and others to reopen with fewer or no restrictions. According to experts, travel over the coming Easter holiday could fuel a new surge, as was seen last year after the year-end holidays.
According to Fauci, “Even if on the planes people are wearing masks, when you get to the airport, the check-in lines, the food lines for restaurants, the boarding… invariably increase the risk of getting infected,” he said.
