PM Imran Khan and COAS conclude discussions on DG ISI appointment

Oct 13, 2021: Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday announced via Twitter that consultations between PM Imran Khan and Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa on the appointment of Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (DG ISI) have been completed.

On Twitter he wrote, “Consultations between the prime minister and the army chief on the appointment of a new DG ISI have been completed and the process for the new appointment has begun.”

Fawad reiterated that the civil and military leadership has yet again proved that all institutions are united for the country’s stability, integrity and development.

During a post-cabinet press conference in Islamabad on Tuesday, the federal minister had said that the issue of DG ISI, chaired by Imran Khan, was also discussed during the cabinet meeting.

He told reporters, “Prime Minister Imran Khan and the army chief had a long meeting last night,” adding that the government had “ideal relations with the army”. He said that the Prime Minister has a very close relationship with the Army Chief. The prime minister’s office will never take a step that would tarnish the army’s image.

The Minister had said that the government would adopt legal procedure for the appointment of DG ISI and ensure that all the constitutional requirements in this regard were met.

He said that the appointment of DG ISI was the prerogative of the Prime Minister of the country.
