WARSAW: Polish ruling party has come under fire after the fifteen-year-old son of the Opposition MP, Magdalena Filiks, committed suicide.

Mikolaj Filiks, 15, son of MP Magdalena Filiks reportedly killed himself after the state-run radio station identified him as a victim of a paedophile.

According to The Guardian reports, on Tuesday, the Polish parliament, the Sejm, observed a minute of silence during the funeral of the fifteen-year-old. Main opposition MP from Civic Platform, Magdalena Filiks, confirmed last week her son had died in February.

In its December report under the Polskie Radio network, the station disclosed the details of the minor victims including their ages and that one victim was the son of a local MP. Moreover, the report revealed that the paedophile convicted in 2021 was not only an advocate of the LGBT community but a former member of the Civic Platform and an election candidate.

After the news was widely circulated across Poland’s other state media, the public severely criticized the ruling Law & Justice (PiS) party for orchestrating the report for its “political gain” demanding that the party take responsibility for the teenager’s suicide. On the other hand, supporters of the ruling party have blamed Civic Platform for “deliberately” covering up the abuse conviction. It is worth mentioning that the PiS which is set to face elections later this year strictly controls the state media and has been a champion for LGBT rights.

In a tweet, Donald Tusk, leader of the Civic Platform, former PM, and President of the European Council has promised to “hold PiS to account for every villainy, for all human harm and tragedies they have caused while in power”.

Likewise, the leader of the Poland 2050 party, Szymon Hołownia, has expressed that there are “no words today that could bring solace”. Holownia added that there will be a “time of reckoning for those whose words bring death”.

On the other hand, Education Minister Przemysław Czarnek expressed it was “detrimental” that the case had not been reported earlier. Czarnek added, “The very people who shout so loudly about the fight against paedophilia are hiding paedophiles in their ranks”.

Meanwhile, prosecutors are investigating the death, as the National Broadcasting Council launches its own inquiry focused on establishing if the content broadcast by the radio station enabled the “identification of child victims, which grossly endangered their welfare”.
