Prime Minister Imran Khan thanks people of AJK for support in polls
July 27, 2021: Prime Minister Imran Khan has thanked the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) after Sunday’s election for helping the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) win at least 25 of the 45 seats in the Legislative Assembly.
Unofficial results In a tweet released from his official handle on Monday, Prime Minister Imran Khan said, “I would like to thank the people of the Azad Jammu Party [PPL] for trusting the PTI through their votes, which led to our electoral victory”
Prime Minister Imran Khan vowed that his party would focus on lifting the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir out of poverty through its government’s flagship programs – the ‘Ehsan and Successful Youth Program’.
Prime Minister Imran Khan also promised to establish accountability and transparency in the regional government.
Khan added, “I want to congratulate all my successful candidates. As ambassador to Kashmir, I will continue to raise my voice in all international forums, including the United Nations, to ensure that the international community, under the auspices of the United Nations, is fully committed to fulfilling its promises to the Kashmiri people,” he said in a follow-up tweet.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) came in second with 11 seats, while the PML-N won six seats. According to unofficial results, the turnout was recorded at around 62%.
More than 700 candidates from 32 political and religious parties contested for 45 seats. According to unofficial results, the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Party (JKPP) and the All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference (AJ&KMC) managed to win one seat.
Five of the eight reserved seats are for women and one each for religious scholars, technocrats and Kashmiris abroad. Members of these seats are nominated after the election.
Separately, Prime Minister Imran Khan, while presiding over a meeting on the political situation in Sindh, decided to visit the province to expand the party’s political influence after the victory in the Azad Jammu Party.
According to sources, it was decided in the meeting that the fourth meeting of the Sindh Strategy Committee would be held in Islamabad next week. The federal government will have political and administrative influence in Sindh.
The meeting was chaired by the Prime Minister and was attended by Federal Ministers Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Asad Umar and Governor Sindh. It was decided in the meeting that important personalities in Sindh would be invited to join PTI. Khan will also liaise with Sindh intellectuals, lawyers’ organizations and civil society.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan chaired a meeting of commodity prices in which he directed the provincial governments to ensure reasonable prices of food items through tehsil and district administrations and competitive commissions as well as profits and to take action against crooks and mafia.
Prime Minister Imran Khan directed the Provincial Chief Secretaries to ensure action against the officers who were negligent in bringing down (high) prices. Imran stressed that providing essential commodities to the people at reasonable prices is the top priority of the government, which stressed the need to create existing cells to make prices more efficient.
Earlier in a meeting with Trade and Investment Adviser Abdul Razzaq Dawood, Imran welcomed the strengthening of trade ties with Central Asian states, saying that Pakistan could become a trade corridor by providing maritime access to the entire region.
During the meeting, Dawood briefed Prime Minister Imran Khan on the progress of bilateral cooperation and trade agreements since the visit to Uzbekistan and the positive results of investors, Central Asian states, especially Tajikistan, and investment and trade.
Prime Minister Imran Khan appreciated the efforts of the Ministry of Commerce and the Board of Investment to enhance trade relations with Central Asian states for the first time in history.
