The commercial aviation sector of Pakistan is no different from the rest of the world as its airlines are taking radical measures for their survival.

According to the details, all private airlines, including Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), have demanded a two-year waiver of aeronautical charges on the issue of recovery of air navigation and aeronautical charges on domestic flights.

Sources said that the airlines have demanded that Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) should not charge other charges including aeronautical from domestic airlines for two years. The global epidemic has badly affected Pakistan’s aviation industry as well as the rest of the world.

From June 1, the CAA also started charging parking, boarding charges, power supply to planes and terminal navigation charges at airports, including landing and take-off on flights. It has also started levying taxes on domestic travelers in terms of embarkation and security.

Sources said that coronavirus also affected the air operations of all private airlines, including PIA. Large-scale flight operations have also been suspended since the inception of the virus, affecting all airlines and causing billions of rupees in losses.

According to sources, all the airlines suffered a total loss of more than Rs 15 billion to Rs 26 billion during this period, while private airlines are losing more than Rs 10 million daily due to price war.

Airlines are also unable to cover 50% of their fuel costs and according to an estimate, Air Blue lost more than Rs 7.5 billion while Serene Air lost more than Rs 4 billion.
