Lahore court grants relief to PTV after PCB suspended agreement for exclusive transmission rights

20th February 2021: A meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting was held in Islamabad under the chairmanship of Senator Faisal Javed at the Parliament House. A detailed discussion took place regarding Right to Information Amendment Bill 2021, problems faced by Pakistan Broadcasting Association, and other related issues.

The amendment bill was introduced in the House by Senators Sajjad Hussain Turi, Waleed Iqbal, Muhammad Ali Saif, Manzoor Ahmed Kakar and Mirza Afridi. Members gave detailed views on the bill. They said that the Upper House and the National Assembly are constitutional institutions and their nature of work is very different from other institutions. They said that it is the prerogative of the Speaker National Assembly and the Chairman Senate to grant access to information related to any House of Parliament.

Senators Rukhsana Zubairi and Pervez Rashid opposed the bill. The concerned ministry briefly presented its views on the proposed amendment bill to the committee. However, the committee decided that the detailed position of the ministry and the Pakistan Information Commission on the bill is essential. The committee directed that a detailed report in this regard be submitted soon. Discussing the issues of Pakistan Broadcasting Association, the committee also sought a detailed reply from the Ministry on the details of amount due in respect of electronic media advertisements and increase in radio and TV license fees.

Describing Pakistan Television as a national asset, the chairman of the committee and the senators stressed that under an effective strategy, this important asset could be taken out of financial difficulties. He said that only under a revolutionary strategy can the institution be brought out of this situation.
