Jan 29, 2022: A “robotic surgeon” developed at Johns Hopkins University in the United States has set a new surgical record by performing four successful surgeries for the first time in the world.

According to a study published in the journal Science Robotics, the robotic surgeon performed four operations on pigs’ stomachs because scientists hoped that these AI-powered ‘doctors’ would soon be able to perform surgery on humans on their own. Manzil News reports that the robotic arm consists of a whole system, consisting of 3D cameras, sensors and special algorithms called “Smart Tissue Autonomous Robots” or STAR.

It was developed in 2016 by Hamid Saeedi, an assistant professor of computer science and mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins University. After five years of continuous improvement, STAR is able to perform complex operations in a completely independent manner, without any human intervention or guidance. The robotic arm can perform a number of subtle steps during surgery, ranging from removing the skin from the desired area to cutting off the relevant internal parts, and finally sealing the area after the surgery.

According to Dr. Hamid Saeedi, STAR has “given far better results than human surgeons.”
