Saudi-led coalition destroys Houthi drone launched towards Jizan airport

Feb 22, 2022: According to a report by Reuters, the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said on Monday its forces had destroyed a drone launched towards King Abdullah airport in the southern Saudi Arabian city of Jizan, Saudi state media reported.

The missile was destroyed but send debris raining down on the airport.

The incident came just hours after a drone landed in Maabouj, a village about 60 kilometres from Jizan city centre.

It was launched by the Iran-backed rebels and did not cause casualties or damage, the coalition said.

In response to the latest attack, the coalition said a military operation would be carried out to “neutralise the Houthis’ specific capabilities”.

Shrapnel from the destroyed drone resulted in 16 civilian injuries, state media quoted a coalition statement as saying.

Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia have become increasingly common, with air defence teams intercepting rockets and drones almost daily.

The coalition added that the drone was shot down at the airport in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. The coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015 after the Houthis ousted an internationally recognized government from Sanaa.

The movement says it is fighting against the corrupt system and foreign aggression.

Yemen has been engulfed by civil war since 2015, months after the Iran-backed Houthi rebels seized control of Sanaa. They took over much of the country’s north and forced the government to flee to the south, then on to Saudi Arabia.
