Senior Pakistani journalist Muhammad Ziauddin passes away

Nov 29, 2021: According to a report by PTV News, Senior journalist Muhammad Ziauddin has passed away in Islamabad at the age of 83 after a prolonged illness.

Born in 1938 in the Indian city of Madras, Ziauddin breathed his last at his residence in Islamabad at the age of 83.

Zia-ud-Din’s family migrated to Pakistan in 1952, five years after the partition, to Dhaka in what was then East Pakistan. Eight years later, in 1960, he shifted to Pakistan and remained here for the rest of his life. Ziauddin joined Karachi University to study journalism.

His first job in the field of journalism was in Pakistan Press Agency. During his 60-year career, Ziauddin wrote for all leading Pakistani newspapers.

He was involved in journalism for almost 60 years and during his tenure as a journalist, Ziauddin also served as the editor of Dawn and The Express Tribune.

After news of his death broke, several people paid tribute to Ziauddin on Twitter.

After his death, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry said that the journalist was one of the most capable and fiercely independent journalists he had encountered.

According to the Express Tribune, his first job in journalism was as a reporter for Pakistan Press International (PPI). He then started working for the Pakistan Press Agency – and since then he has held editorial positions in various news outlets, with the Express Tribune being his last.

In July 2014, Zia-ud-Din resigned as executive editor of the English daily and began working as a freelance journalist.
