Serena Williams’ Wimbledon career ends in tears
Lahore, 30th June: American Tennis legend Serena Williams ended her Wimbledon career in tears last night during the 24th Grand Slam.
Serena Williams’s dreams of winning an 8th Wimbledon singles’ title and adding up to Margaret Court’s Grand Slam singles record of 24 ended in tears on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old was leading 3-1 in the first set of her first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus when she slipped and hurt her left ankle.
The seven-times Wimbledon winner was clearly in pain on Center Court and was immediately taken for her medical treatment.
Williams returned after receiving medical treatment but called it a day at 3-3 and walked off from Centre Court in tears. It is the first time that Tennis star has quit in the first round of Wimbledon.

Serena had started the match with strapping on her right thigh, she let out a shriek and sank down on the grass sobbing. She was then taken off the court with an apparent ankle injury.
Roger Federer who is eight-times men’s singles champion expressed shock at Williams’ departure and expressed concern about the surface, with the roof closed on Centre Court on a rainy afternoon.
He said, “I do feel it feels a tad more slippery maybe under the roof. I don’t know if it’s just a gut feeling. You do have to move very, very carefully out there. If you push too hard in the wrong moments, you do go down. It’s super key to get through those first two rounds because the grass is more slippery, it is softer. As the tournament progresses, usually it gets harder and easier to move on.”
It may be recalled that Federer’s first-round opponent Adrian Mannarino of France also retired with a knee injury after a slip in the match immediately before Williams’.
British player Andy Murray also expressed, “Brutal for SerenaWilliams but the center court is extremely slippy out there. Not easy to move out there.”

It is to be noted that Serena Williams has been a Wimbledon finalist in her last four appearances but her attempt to equal Margaret Court’s record 24 Grand Slam singles titles was hampered since her last in Australia in 2017.
With the absence of world number two Naomi Osaka and third-ranked Simona Halep this year, hopes were rising of another year to remember.
