Shaniera Akram Demands to Have Her Own Identity
Shaniera Akram, wife of legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram, in a conference has reaffirmed the notion of personal identity stating that she has her own name and urged people not to call her Mrs. Akram.
Journalist Nadeem Farooq Paracha recently referred to her as “Wasim Akram’s wife” at the Literature Festival held in Islamabad today. When an unknown woman from the audience stopped him from calling Shaniera Akram as Mrs. Akram. Reportedly the female audience member countered, “she has a name!”. The sudden gesture by the unidentified woman has reportedly been well received by the audience.
Many people tweeted about the incident, sharing that they too were uncomfortable at the events of the festival. Moreover, it has been confirmed that Shaniera Akram has replied to a few tweets too responding with gratitude to her supporters.

As confirmed by reports, Shaniera Akram reportedly tweeted, “If you are talking about someone on stage at a literacy festival you should at least give them the dignity of a name. And I am not a celebrity but I have earned my name, thank you very much”.
The tweet helps reassert the idea that women deserve the right to having their personal identity rather than simply being wife, mother, sister, and/or daughter of men from her family. Shaiera Akram is one such example of a woman who is caged into the identity of a wife by society simply because her husband is a popular former cricketer.
