Shaukat Tarin elected senator from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

PESHAWAR: Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin has been elected as a senator on Monday from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), days before the mini-budget.

According to the details, polling for the election took place in the old hall of the Provincial Assembly which began at 9 am and continued till 4 pm (local time). Finance Advisor Shaukat Tarin bagged 87 votes, while five lawmakers did not partake in the elections.

According to KP Health Minister Taimur Khan Jhagra, four votes were rejected in the polls for the vacant Senate seat.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had given the ticket to Shaukat Tarin by forcing Ayub Afridi to resign from the Senate seat while Shaukat Amirzada of Awami National Party (ANP), Muhammad Saeed of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Zahir Shah of Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam Fazal (JUI-F) were contesting against him.

It is to be remembered that according to unofficial preliminary results of the first local body elections in KP after the amalgamation of the tribal districts, the opposition parties have a joint lead over the ruling PTI.
